Energy saving investments: Buy compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs in place of the regular incandescent ones. These bulbs are great energy-saving tools, and can save you about a year. Try an energy-saving tool like The Power-Save. Swap out your showerheads with new low-flow types. If the water heater is in an unheated part of the house (or even if it isn’t) invest in an insulating blanket/jacket. Replace air filters and keep air conditioner coils free of dust and dirt. Make sure your house is properly insulated. Modernize your windows, or at least check them for proper seal.
Household Appliances:
• Wait for a full load before using the clothes washer.
• You’ve heard it before: Use less water!
• Raise the thermostat temperature in summer and lower it in winter. Even a couple of degrees can make a difference.
• Switch off the computer monitor even when you take a short break. It only takes a second to turn it back on.
When using the oven, don’t preheat or peek inside more than necessary.
Run the dishwasher only when you have a full load and utilize the no heat dry option. Using the air dry function saves 20% of the dishwasher’s total electric use.
Use cold water more often when you do the laundry.
Change out your appliances for energy-efficient ones.
Twenty percent of your home’s electricity is consumed by your refridgerator. Set the temperature as close to 37 degrees as feasible and check the seals.
Try turning down the thermostat on your water heater. One hundred twenty degress (120) F is usually sufficient.
Many local utility companies provide free home energy audits. This can help you see where and how your home is not being energy efficient.
Remember, lowering your utility bill is equivalent to saving energy, thus helping the earth conserve energy for the future.

Welcome back!

You have missed a big one. I have read that 8-10% of US domestic energy use simply goes to drying our laundry. If you switch to a clothes drying rack or an outdoor clothes line then you can reduce your bill by 8%! During the summer if you have air conditioning you can reduce it by even more since you will not have that heat in the house. And when you dry your clothes in the house during the winter you add much needed humidity to the air and you can reduce the use of a humidifier saving you even more money and making you more comfortable. A win win situation all around.
