Saving Gas

Orton HDR HummerGas prices have came down some in the past couple of weeks, but at $3.80 it is still a lot higher than most people would prefer. I know the high cost of gas has been hurting the MyTownTalks household and we have been cutting back all we can. I sold my gas guzzling Nissan Titan and we bought an 36 mile per gallon Nissan Altima. The Altima does not advertise that it produces 36 miles  for every gallon of gas, but that is what we have been experiencing since we purchased it.

Seems like we are not alone, just saw a news story about how the Hummer is expected to be come extinct. Many dealers won’t buy the hummers, not even the Hummer H3 as they can’t sell them. Even the dealers who do buy the Hummers of obtain them in a trade in are only offering pennies on the dollar. One dealer recently remarked that he would only offer 50% for any type of Hummer as he would have offered six months ago. You will start to see this type of thing happen more and more. The big SUVs and Trucks that have been all the rage over the past 10-15 years will now start to become cheaper and cheaper as the demand for the vehicles fall.

Hopefully this will continue as we all really need to do our part to save gas. Whether its getting rid of your own gas guzzler for a more fuel efficient car or ensuring the your car is tuned up and you change your oil. Not only will proper maintenance help you to save gas it will also help you to increase the life of your automobile. I’m concerned if the price of gas goes down then people will stop trying to conserve energy and will go back to their old ways. This is not going to help as we really need to determine methods to get off our oil dependence.

T.Boone Pickens seems to have the right idea by utilizing the wind energy in the mid-west, but we also need new technologies and higher fuel efficient cars. If someone could create a new type of engine that would move a Hummer at a low cost and not have to rely upon gasoline for a power source then they could make a killing buying up the cheaper Hummers and converting them to a fuel efficient method of transportation. I knew I should have went to engineering school. Perhaps I’ll go back and see what I can come up with. The point is what every you can do to save gas, by keeping your vehicle running great to combining errands, to asking you boss if you can telecommute will all help to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and help to save gas.

If everyone will just do a little bit then we can make a difference until someone actually creates the new engine for the Hummer’s and other SUV’s that does not rely upon gasoline and they become cool to drive again.
