What is a wind turbine? A wind turbine is sometimes referred to as a windmill or wind generator. The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but there are differences. The wind turbine is a machine that utilizes wind energy to make mechanical energy. This mechanical energy is then used as is or changed to electrical energy. The windmill can use the energy “as is” for work such as grinding stones or pumping water; whereas a wind generator uses the mechanical energy to produce electricity. Are there different types of wind turbines? There are two types of wind turbines, classified by their orientation:
The DIY Route to Building a Wind Generator
- Horizontal Axis Turbines – The blades of these wind turbines turn along a horizontal axis.
- Vertical Axis Turbines – These turbine blades turn along a vertical axis.
The horizontal axis wind turbines are more popular. They are more efficient than vertical type. What are some of the benefits of installing a wind turbine to produce electricity? Let’s look at some of the advantages of a wind turbine:
- Power-Saving:: Wind turbines utilize a free source of power – the wind. This makes them a cost-effective way to make electricity. And since they don’t use non-renewable resources, they also benefit the earth as a whole.
- Cost Effectiveness: The only expense involved in installing a wind turbine is the initial expense and the cost of maintenance. The energy source is free!
- Impact on the Environment: The wind turbines are environment friendly in the way that they do not emit harmful gases or affect the environment in any way.
- A More Reliable Source of Energy: Getting your electricity supply from a wind generator means you’ll no longer have to depend on a power company. No more blackouts!
Constructing Your Own Wind Turbine
What conditions are necessary for installing a wind turbine? While installing your own wind generator can be very beneficial for you and others, particular conditions must first be met. Here are some aspects to consider before installing a wind turbine. Both these conditions must be met:
- At least one acre of clear space
- The average wind speed is around 11 miles per hour.
- Make sure the tower and the base are sturdily built. It is important to take wind turbulence into consideration before you invest in the wind turbine.
- Ensure the correct height between the tower, the generator and the cells are achieved

While wind energy gains a lot of prominence in the US so do energy transformers. Energy transformers play an important role in the transmission and distribution of energy. Energy efficient transformers also bring doing the cost per unit of the energy generated.
