Hypermiling Getting More Miles for your buck

Unless you have been under a rock you realize that gas prices are hurting everyone and really putting a strain on the economy. Most of the world does not think our gas prices are too bad as a lot of places pay a lot more, but the difference is these prices are not built into our economy and it hurts everyone. Everything is related to energy prices and as a result of these prices everything is going up including all consumables this hurts everyone.

Even GM has announced today that the gas prices are really hurting their business and they will be making quite a few changes which result in more people losing their jobs in plants which make SUVs and Trucks. I’m sure this will be come the norm as more companies are forced to  make cuts or raise prices as a result of the pressure put on the US Economy. So what can we do, we have to reduce the amount we drive and the amount of gas we each use.

Many people have been getting rid of their SUV’s and moving towards vehicles that will get better mileage and a little more bang for their gas buck. I’ve been one of these people. I recently sold my Nissan Titan pickup and purchased a more fuel efficient Nissan Altima. While I miss the power my truck offered I do like the fact that we have reduced our gas bill almost in half. I took a hit on the truck sale as i did not get what it should be worth, but as GM has realized there is just not a market for vehicles that are not fuel efficient. I lost about $2,000 on the sale, but I should be able to make that up with my gas savings.

Another method some people are doing to save gas is driving with a technique termed Hyper miling. This is basically driving in a way that helps you obtain better gas mileage  with your current vehicle. If you want to take advantage of this the first thing you need to do is to ensure your car is already obtaining the best gas mileage possible. There are a couple of things you can do to help this:

  1. Ensure you have your car tuned up. If you car has more than 50,000 miles then you should get a tune up and ensure your spark plugs and electrical system is operating at peak efficiency.
  2. Ensure you change your oil and other fluids on schedule. Not only will this improve the life of your car, it will also help reduce friction that robs you of gas mileage.
  3. Check your tire pressure and ensure your tires are properly inflated. All tires will lose pressure over time, so you need to check this regularly.

Now to how to hypermile and gain even more gas mileage. Hypermiling is not difficult but it does require some discipline. First step, don’t accelerate quickly as you start from a stop. If you have a RPM gauge in your car, then try to keep your RPM below 2000 RPM and the lower you can keep it the better. This is not just important for acceleration, but for all driving instances. Keeping your RPM down helps to improve the efficiency of your car and does not require as much fuel for the same amount of travel.

Along with your RPM it should be apparent that you need to drive slower. Don’t drive 70 miles per hour when 50 miles per hour will do just fine. Add a little more time to your trip time so you don’t need to drive as fast.

You also need to use physics to your advantage. You should have learned in grade school that objects in motion tend to stay in motion. So these means a limit use of brakes. Allow your car to slow down naturally which means leaving more room between you and the cars in front of you. As you are going down hills remove your foot from the gas pedal and allow the car to coast. If you do these techniques religiously then you can reduce the amount you spend on gas by as much as 30% and you will also be helping the environment and helping to drive gas prices back down as you will not have as much of a demand for gas. There are some additional techniques that can be used to help your mileage even more, but those are advanced techniques. Its best to get these basics down before you try the advanced techniques of rarely braking at all while you are driving.

I don’t think that I have the discipline to Hypermil. It will take some time to get accustomed to that.
