Build a Storage Shed from Plans

These straightforward tips will help you build a storage shed from scratch and remember, you do not need to be a professional or an expert to build a practical and good-looking shed.  But you will need good-quality storage shed plans or there is a good chance you will end up wasting much time and cash and have a ramshackle building as well.

To start, think about the site for your storage shed.  For instance, if it will store your ride-on mower, there should be easy access between the shed and the lawn.  The measurements of the storage shed are very important, and it is wise to choose the next size up – you will inevitably find things that you want to store in the shed after it has been built, and that you had previously overlooked when you bought your storage shed plans!

Now you need to list the larger things to be stored in the shed, and allocate a space for them. For instance, will the door be wide enough for the tractor?  Will you require lots of shelves?  Will you need to store items like paint out of sunlight?  If you think that a small 6 x 6 ft storage shed will be sufficient, go for the next one up.  You will congratulate yourself later.

The storage shed plans that you select will have many options for building the shed.  Apex or pent style roof?  Wooden, metal or plastic construction?  It is really easy to fashion your storage shed to to meet all your requirements, and those storage shed plans that we recommend will provide a comprehensive list of tools and materials needed for putting the shed together.

Metal or plastic are sometimes selected for the shed material, but wood is the preferred option for most sheds because it comes from renewable resources, is very easy to use and it blends naturally in any location.  It should be treated with chemical preserving agents or, better still, be pressure-treated during final manufacture.

Finally you need to decide on the base.  Many storage shed plans call for a wooden floor, made from exterior-grade ply or tongue-and-groove planks, and this will be satisfactory for light traffic.  However wooden floors are not strong enough for storing heavy items, oil products or corrosive liquids.  A concrete foundation is much better.  It needs to be at least 4 inches deep and 2 or 3 inches wider than the shed footprint.  This will be a little more expensive (maybe $200 more than a wooden floor, depending on the size) but will last the life of the shed, take all the wear you can throw at it and be maintenance-free.
