One Dollar Diet Project

I don’t watch a lot of TV, but it seems that TV sometimes watches those of us on the net. That is exactly what has happened with the One Dollar Diet Project. This little blog started out as an experiment by two social justice teachers, Christopher and Kerri, who wanted to see if it was possible. I know its possible as I seriously doubt we ate on much than a dollar a day when I was a kid.
I do find the eating on a dollar a day site very interesting and while I have not read all the posts I definitely will. Perhaps I can start my own dollar a day diet. I’ll give you a hint on how to do this, eat dried beans and peas. You can cook a lot of beans for a dollar. How do I know, that was what we ate a lot of when I was a kid. We were very poor and not to mention the fact that my parent pretty much spent any money they had on drugs and not on food for us kids. That seems like a really long time ago and reflecting on it makes me realize just how far I have come in my life. While I’m not rich by any means I can definitely afford to spend more than a dollar a day for groceries. Well enough about me, lets look at a few of the dollar a day posts.
The one that started the dollar day diet project. I really think this is cool and a real lesson in the social issues facing the world. So how do you eat on a dollar a day, check out the DollarDayDiet Recipes page for the answer. Many people in the US are not aware of how little some other people in the world spend to survive. We take a lot of granted and do not really know how good we have it. Eating of one dollar a day could not only help people in this time of uncertain economics. I have spent an entire months worth of food for Christpher and Kerri on a single lunch this week. Of course the lunch was very good. Perhaps I should follow in their footsteps and eat for a dollar a day for a month. I would not care to get all the media attention the One Dollar a Day project has gotten, but it may be good to get back to my roots so to speak. Hey I could eat roots
Enough joking congrats to the One Dollar a Day diet project. Your sacrifice seems to be raising awareness to this issue all over the world.
Welcome back!

I just ‘dicovered’ the One Dollar Diet Project yesterday (Friday, December 19th?). It was a link from a Waste Nothing list on Yahoo…anyway…I, too find the idea interesting and am planning to give it a try at some point. Though I haven’t read all of their posts, I DID read day one. It seems that they emptied their house of all other food before beginning the project. I would assume that was to make things easier and to avoid temptation. Yes? If that is the case, I will be a long time in getting to try the experiment. My pantry is very well stocked at this point. A few other posts/comments contained ideas that seemed to be (potentially) helpful for others attempting this.
I, too, congratulate them for trying this. It has caused me to take a look at my eating patterns. It promises to be a hot topic at the holiday gatherig tonight.
I totally agree in looking for new ways of saving money while exploring new flavors and ideas.
I’m doing a one dollar a day diet and I find it really good. I take vitamins and I also try different new recipes.

Thanks!
Christopher and Kerri did a great job with this social experiment — we’re taking a little different approach to the ”dollar a day” challenge and am confident that it will be a life-changing experience, to say the least.
We invite you to follow our progress also…

Billions of people from around the world really do live on just $1 a day. That became all too evident for me in my mission trip to Tajikistan a few months back. I now have the opportunity to travel to Zambia here in the new year where the majority of the country also lives in poverty.
By doing this ”dollar a day challenge”, I hope to have a glimpse of what it’s like to live like so many living in extreme poverty.
Come visit us and learn more about our challenge!
Thanks

Hello! A group of us read “Eyes of the Heart” by Aristide and moved by the plight of so many in Haiti (but in much of the rest of the world as well) with little food, we decided to raise our own awareness about hunger and living with less by eating what food $2/day would buy for one week. A few of us have documented our insights during the week on our blog; more people are preparing to start the project. We plan to pool the money we saved during the week of eating less and donating it the Colorado Haiti Project.
I applaud all those who are involved in these initiatives…perhaps from our experiences and reflections will come some saving actions.
All good wishes!!
