Hurricane Gustav aimed at New Orleans
Seems like New Orleans can’t get a break when it comes to Hurricanes. Just a little over two years since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita unleashed their fury on the Gulf Coast, now comes Hurricane Gustav which according to weather experts this storm could cause so much more damage than Katrina caused.
Hurricane Gustav is expected to make landfall sometime tomorrow and currently is on track to smack New Orleans with the storm surge making a direct hit on the city. This is likely to cause more intensive flooding in New Orleans than happened with Hurricane Katrina. Everyone remembers the issues caused with Katrina and all the people who where displaced as a result. Many of those same people are still living in the Government trailers which FEMA moved in after Katrina hit. I’ve always wondered if the people who live in these FEMA trailers are actually paying a fee for living in these trailers or if its just a Government handout.
Don’t get me wrong my heart goes out to these people who have lost everything, but the truth if they are still living for free two years after the storm hit then they are taking advantage of the Government and the situation they found themselves in. While I believe the Government has a responsibility to help people who have been uprooted as a result of natural disasters such as these Hurricanes, the Government is not responsible for taking care of someone forever. At least this time the cities and parishes in Southern Louisiana and Mississippi are mandating that people get out of the area prior to Hurricane Gustav making landfall. While the Cities have not fully recovered from Hurricane Katrina, they should be better prepared than they where last time.
Hurricane Gustav is currently a Category Three hurricane and is likely to reach category four status prior to landfall. Of course there is also a chance Hurricane Gustav could become a Category 5 Hurricane which would be devastating to the Gulf Coast. Hurricane Andrew was a Category Five Hurricane when it hit South Florida in 1992 and it pretty much flattened Southern Florida.
Welcome back!
